After researching Jackson Pollock and Abstract Expressionism I decided to look at action painting because of the techniques involved did not require applying the paint carefully. This caused me to find an interest in artists Norman Bluhm and Joan Mitchell.

Mitchell often made multi-paneled paintings and she was inspired by poetry, nature and landscapes. Her intentions when creating her work was not to produce recognisable images, but to convey her emotions. She is well known for her sweeping and gestural brushstrokes, compositional rhythms and bold colouration. Her work balances elements of structured composition and wild improvisation. Norman Bluhm was an Abstract Expressionist, Action Painter. Even though his work changed throughout his career, it kept the same elements of the use of line and colour, as well as the same style of brushstrokes.
