first work of the semester

to start the semester off with the new project i stuck with a style that i knew and enjoyed; abstract expressionism. i gave myself the challenge of picking three to four colours, placing them on the paper to begin with then used a palette knife to blend and move them around the composition. these became small separate series' of works that went well together in sets of 4 and all seemed to stay in the center of the composition, surrounded by negative space that draws you back into focusing on the center.

i then used a technique that i feel is similar to the work of Jamie Orr by creating textured and raised work by placing tick coats of acrylic paint onto a surface then pressing and dropping it onto another surface to create a wave effect of mixed colour. I really enjoyed creating these pieces as it made me use all of the space and by creating larger and busier pieces it expanded my project from small, confined and planned pieces to larger, riskier and exploratory pieces that helped me expend my ideas.

i am next planning on combining the two techniques and also i aim to work at a larger scale and keep on using the whole surface area.
