large canvas paintings
this selection of paintings show the gradual process that was involved with creating two large scale paintings on stretched canvases, 6ftx5ft and 3ftx3ft. because the canvases were both second hand and recycled i had to put base coats on both so they instantly had raised and textured surfaces which worked out great for me, but with the larger canvas, oils and inks had been used previously so some patches of blue and pink showed through the many layers of white primer. but i quite liked the colour and placement so in wasn't bothered by this at all.
i then decided to work on them at the same time but using different techniques; so i laid one canvas down on the floor and leaned the other against the studio walls.for the larger canvas i used watercolour and painted cloud like shapes and let them drip down the canvas (using various different colours) and then for the smaller flat canvas i pored some watered down paint over it so it splashed and spread about as well as throwing acrylic paint over the top straight from the tube.
then using permanent marker pens and fine liner drawing pens i drew the outlines of birds, insects and woodland animals onto both canvases then used my watercolour paints to colour in them (adding more detail to the larger canvas ans leaving the smaller canvas with less detail as to show how the intensity can affect the overall feel of the painting) i then dripped watercolour down both canvases to add another layer of colour and detail that also acted as visual indicators that took your gaze and attention across the compositions.
then, finally, to finish off the larger of the the pieces i used my acrylic paint to flick, splatter and throw paint across the canvas, focusing more on the emptier spaces to balance out the drawings, yet not ignoring those areas completely.
overall i am very happy with these paintings and plan to produce more large scale drawings as the semester ends and the new one begins as i currently plan on carrying on this project and idea.
