Large Canvas Paintings

Based on the previous work from my sketchbooks I decided to create some larger scale paintings that started off as abstract expressionist styles, as well as working with my strong interest in creating art with thick texture and depth through texture and layers. I used white backgrounds and pastel shades so that the large scale would not come across as overwhelming, but calming instead. I placed the canvases across the floor and propped up against the wall so that I could easily manipulate the wet paint through dripping, splattering, bleeding and blending the material around. These different methods helped to create the thick layers of paint that added texture to the composition.

On one painting i decided to draw with acrylic paint and through this technique I 'drew' some flowers in the same sketchy style I have used in previous pieces of work. I prefer to stay away from using black in my work so I opted for a bright yellow and a brighter burgundy/maroon colour for the flowers so that they would still catch the attention of the audience whilst staying away from the idea that the flowers were dying; which is what I feel would have happened if i'd have used black.
